In Los Angeles, Michael meets Sarah at a gym, and a casual encounter slowly unfurls into a surreal, night-long odyssey through the city. Their dinner plans take shape at the apartment she shares with her mother, Mrs. Hughes, and their dog Jasper, setting the stage for a night that will complicate every ordinary expectation.

Tragedy strikes at the table when Jasper dies suddenly. Mrs. Hughes insists that Michael bury the dog in the park, along with a bag of Jasper’s belongings—a ball, a blanket, a bowl, and a squeaky toy. What begins as a grim chore quickly spirals into something stranger and more unsettling. Michael places the body in a garbage bag and hails a taxi, where the deranged driver, Jack Cloud, pushes a disturbing deal: sell the dead dog’s corpse and disperse the dog’s things across the city. The night becomes a moving carousel of odd stops and strange encounters as the two of them (and later Sarah) drift through a string of odd venues.

Sarah joins in, eager to monetize the somber relic, and the trio finds themselves touring a ragged, impromptu economy. They visit a fur coat maker, a hot dog restaurant crowded with homeless patrons, and a quiet Chinese restaurant, each stop threading a new layer of the city’s underbelly into the night. Tensions flare as they are briefly confronted by a gang, and they participate in a voodoo ceremony intended to speak with the dog’s spirit, a moment that adds a ritualistic texture to the odd enterprise.

As the night wears on, Michael and Sarah drift away from the cab driver, culminating in a confrontation outside a nightclub run by drag queen twins. The disturbance marks a turning point: Michael decides he’s no longer aligned with Sarah, and the two go their separate ways, leaving the cab driver to continue guiding this bizarre quest on his own terms.

By morning, the story circles back to the park. Michael attempts to resume burying Jasper, only to have the cab driver reappear and steal the corpse. A sense of deja vu hits when Michael notices another man quietly burying a dead dog in the same park, hinting at a broader, eerie pattern behind their nocturnal scramble. He voices a practical, unsettling proposition to the other man—one that could turn a funeral-like rite into a continuing business—and with that, the film ends, leaving the fate of Jasper—and the strange economy built around him—ambiguous and unresolved.
