TV writer Gregory Whitcomb served bravely in the Pacific during World War II and has since settled into civilian life with his young wife, Katy Whitcomb. A letter from the Air Force Department arrives that Katy believes could pull Greg back to active duty from the Air Force reserve, but she keeps this to herself during a party celebrating their wedding anniversary.

A captain in attendance, Barney Sloan casually refers to Greg as an “old-timer,” a remark that wounds his pride. He drinks too much and passes out, and the incident fans the flame of a plan: Greg wants to rejoin the service if he can learn about that letter, while Katy, who herself once served as an Air Force officer, chooses to re-enlist so they can stay together.

Yet fate intervenes: Greg fails his physical exam because of a bad knee. Katy is sent to a base in Hawaii without him, leaving the couple separated by distance and circumstance. Neighbors warn that Katy might be lonely among attractive servicemen, so Greg flies to Honolulu to be with her, turning the visit into a longer stay.

Once there, he finds himself spending long hours with the wives who populate the base, a situation their husbands view with mounting concern. In a desperate bid to keep Katy from advancing in her duties, Greg considers sabotaging her career to win a discharge for them both; the plan backfires, yet the knee that once failed him has healed, and he is recalled to duty.

Complications deepen when Katy learns she must be honorably discharged and sent home because she is pregnant, a turn of events that tests their bond and the balance between duty and family. The story glides through this tense period with a steady, even-handed look at postwar life, duty, and the choices couples face when military obligations collide with personal futures.
