Three young women with traumatic pasts decide to start fresh by enlisting in the WAVES, each bringing a different life story to the same shared purpose. Mary Kate Yarbrough, Joan Evans from the Midwest, was left heartbroken when her fiancé jilted her; Whitney Young, Esther Williams, a Long Island socialite who has walked away from several engagements; and Una Yancey, Vivian Blaine, a New Yorker determined to locate Archie, her Navy boyfriend who has only written twice in two years and last mentioned Paris. The trio’s common thread is their last name starting with Y, but their backgrounds could not be more different.

They arrive at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center for WAVE boot camp and are assigned to the same company, becoming roommates and finding shared strength in each other. Early on, Whitney earns the role of recruit company commander after saving Mary Kate from drowning during swim training, a moment that seals their bond and sets the tone for their time together. The three of them learn to endure the rigors of boot camp, with Whitney and Una adapting far more quickly than Mary Kate, whose homesickness tests the limits of her resolve.

Mary Kate’s struggle nearly ends her naval career when she faces an elimination board that could discharge her for inadaptability. Whitney champions her, and with steadfast support from her friends and hard-won determination, Mary Kate convinces the board to allow her to continue serving. With a brief pass granted midway through training, the three head to Chicago for a much-needed break and a chance to catch their breath—but the city quickly makes clear that life with the WAVES isn’t as easy as it looks. The bars are crowded with sailors, and the WAVES discover that meeting men is not as simple as it seems. At a newly co-educational bar in a downtown hotel, Whitney attracts the attention of a man who is not only older but also the civilian doctor assigned to the WAVE training battalion. What begins as a social dinner swiftly spirals into tension when three WACs interrupt, and Whitney ends up facing a disciplinary board after a confrontation. The tension doesn’t derail her long-term prospects, though: a forthright rebuke from Dr. Paul Elliot, a man she has a charged history with, helps steer the evening toward resolution, illustrating the friction between personal impulse and professional duty.

Back at the base, Whitney’s softer side re-emerges as she helps a young brother and sister who are arguing by the pool. The trio spends time swimming, diving, and playing, letting their guards down between responsibilities and training. The base’s USO dance becomes a showcase for unity and talent: a precision drill platoon of Black WAVES performs with military precision, followed by a spirited song-and-dance number. Una asks Dr. Elliot to dance, trying to steer the night toward Whitney, who, for her part, steps away but later finds a moment of connection in the poolside atmosphere and with Pops, the civilian plumber who spends his time keeping the barracks’ plumbing from clogging with half-eaten candy.

The evenings continue with a quiet, intimate confrontation when Whitney tracks Dr. Elliot to a nearby cinema. They engage in a whispered debate about each other’s characters, with Elliot challenging Whitney’s history of 12 engagements and Whitney attacking his air of superiority. A Navy captain overhears enough to recognize Whitney’s depth and potential, urging Elliot not to waste a remarkable woman. The moment passes, but the exchange leaves a lasting impression on Whitney, who then delivers a solo aquatic ballet that she performs for the pool—an expression of resilience and grace.

As graduation approaches, the three WAVES are separated to their new assignments, mirroring the uncertain, hopeful path ahead. Mary Kate is sent to Brooklyn, Una finally lands the assignment she hoped for—Paris, France—only to discover Archie’s own assignment to Great Lakes will keep them apart for a year. Whitney moves on to advanced training in Washington, DC before an overseas posting, a step that promises new challenges and opportunities. The men in their lives promise to work toward joining them, and as the Twentieth Century Limited pulls away from the station, the three friends wave goodbye to the world they’ve fought to belong to, stepping into the next phase of their lives with quiet resolve and renewed confidence.
