Two sailors-to-be, Al Crowthers and Melvin Jones, first cross paths in a Navy recruiting line and quickly become friends. Al has tried to enlist eleven times, his stubborn knee limiting him, yet his constant aim is to impress women. Melvin, meanwhile, is allergic to cosmetics, and his doctor prescribes ocean travel as the only affordable route to follow orders. When Navy standards are briefly lowered, both are accepted and assigned to Lardoski, the intimidating bully they met in line and nicknamed “fathead.”
