Marshall Jewel Reed was an American actor whose prolific career spanned more than three decades during Hollywood's Golden Age, establishing him as a stalwart presence in Westerns and action-packed serials. Born on May 28, 1917, in Englewood, Colorado, Reed cultivated his passion for performance from an early age, making his theatrical debut at just ten years old in children's theater productions. During his high school years, he demonstrated remarkable leadership and dedication to the craft by simultaneously managing two separate drama groups, foreshadowing his future as a versatile entertainment professional. Before achieving silver screen success, Reed held various working-class positions that would later inform his rugged on-screen persona, working as a horse trainer, meter reader, bookkeeper, and mail clerk. His professional acting career began in earnest at Denver's historic Elitch Gardens summer stock theater, where he not only performed but also contributed behind the scenes by making costumes and constructing scenery. Reed eventually established his own stock company on the West Coast while gaining valuable experience in theatrical productions across New York and Los Angeles, building the foundation for what would become a remarkable film career encompassing over 200 motion pictures between 1943 and 1978.

Reed entered the cinema industry in 1943 with appearances in Westerns such as Bordertown Gun Fighters and Silver Spurs, quickly establishing himself as an athletic performer capable of handling his own stunts, fight sequences, and horseback riding. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, he became a familiar antagonist in dozens of Westerns and cliffhanger serials produced by Columbia and Republic Studios, typically cast as charismatic action heavies opposite major stars of the era. Among his most notable performances was the rare sympathetic portrayal of Buffalo Bill Cody in the 1954 serial Riding with Buffalo Bill, demonstrating his range beyond the villainous roles that defined much of his early career. His television career proved equally extensive and enduring, with memorable appearances as Inspector Fred Asher in The Lineup and diverse roles in beloved series including Bat Masterson, The Cisco Kid, The Gene Autry Show, Lassie, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, and Dragnet. Reed's final screen appearance came in 1978 with Till Death, concluding a remarkable tenure in Hollywood that saw him transition seamlessly from B-movie serials to prime-time television dramas. Tragically, on April 15, 1980, he passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 62 from a massive hemorrhage following a brain tumor, survived by his fifth wife, Carlyn Miller, and their daughter.
