The Gypsy Moths 1969

On a Fourth of July weekend in the small Kansas town of Benton, a skydiving troupe known as the Gypsy Moths arrives to perform for the locals. The group is led by Mike Rettig [Burt Lancaster], with partners Joe Browdy [Gene Hackman] and Malcolm Webson [Scott Wilson] in tow. They take up residence at the home of Malcolm’s uncle and aunt, John Brandon [William Windom] and Elizabeth Brandon [Deborah Kerr], setting the stage for a web of personal entanglements to unfold under the watchful event of their show.

Mike’s presence quickly stirs the house’s dynamics. He becomes romantically involved with Elizabeth, a relationship that stirs tension when her husband overhears their tryst. Simultaneously, Malcolm falls for Annie Burke [Bonnie Bedelia], a local student who boards at the Brandon home, while Joe notices a different kind of attraction, taking an interest in a topless dancer. The mix of affair, longing, and a high-adrenaline vocation creates a charged atmosphere in a town that isn’t used to outsiders or their risky performances.

As the weekend progresses, Mike asks Elizabeth to leave town with him, but she declines, choosing to remain where she is rooted. To pay for his funeral, Malcolm performs the same stunt that claimed Mike’s life, then leaves by train that night, choosing to distance himself from Mike’s funeral and the emerging questions about what really happened.

In the wake of the tragedy, the town and the remaining skydivers carry on with a somber tone, acknowledging the risks their profession entails and the personal costs that accompany risk, romance, and jealousy.
