Sheree North

Sheree North (born Dawn Shirley Crang on January 17, 1932) was an American actress, singer, and dancer who rose to fame in the 1950s as 20th Century‑Fox’s ambitious attempt to craft a successor to the iconic Marilyn Monroe. Born in Los Angeles to June (née Shoard) and Richard Crang, she grew up on the West Coast and entered the entertainment world after being discovered performing at the Macayo Club, which led to chorus‑girl work in Here Come the Girls (1953) and a coveted Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in Hazel Flagg. After signing a four‑year Fox contract in 1954, the studio heavily promoted her, even placing her on the cover of Life magazine with the bold claim that she would “take over from Marilyn Monroe,” a narrative that sparked intense media scrutiny and occasional scandal, such as the 8 mm bikini footage that Fox leveraged for publicity. North’s early film highlights include the musical comedy How to Be Very, Very Popular (1955), the leg‑focused publicity campaign for The Lieutenant Wore Skirts (1956), and a string of varied roles that showcased her versatility, from the dramatic No Down Payment (1957) to supporting parts alongside Elvis Presley in The Trouble with Girls (1969).

Throughout the 1960s and beyond, North transitioned into a reliable character actress, appearing on nearly every prominent television series of the era, from westerns like The Virginian to sitcoms such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her talent for comic timing earned Emmy nominations for Marcus Welby, M.D. (1976) and Archie Bunker's Place (1980). She also maintained a vibrant stage presence, starring in productions like I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962) and the controversial Los Angeles run of Dutchman (1965). Sheree North continued to work steadily into the 1990s, with memorable guest spots on Seinfeld and a final film role in John Landis’s Susan’s Plan (1998), before passing away on November 4, 2005, at age 73.
