Rebecca, Marianne Faithfull leaves her husband Roger Mutton’s bed on her prized motorbike, a bold symbol of freedom and escape. Her journey takes her from France toward Heidelberg to visit Daniel, Alain Delon, and along the road the film lets her mind drift into psychedelic and erotic reveries that reveal the shifting tides of her attachments. Flashbacks unfold to fill in the background: Rebecca met Daniel while working at her Marius Goring’s bookshop a few weeks before her marriage to Raymond, a schoolteacher. Daniel gives Rebecca motorcycle driving lessons on a Norton Atlas, and their relationship quickly becomes intimate. She asks him if he will marry her, and he simply says:
“No”
She tells him that she is soon to be married, and he says he will give her a wedding present. A Harley Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle arrives for Rebecca at the bookshop, a tangible symbol of rebellion and possibility. Her father’s influence—and the weight of her impending choice—weigh heavily as she contemplates whether to accept the gift. She turns to Raymond for guidance, and he advises her to do what will make her happy. With the memory of Daniel and the looming wedding in her mind, she decides to ride from France to Germany to be with him, chasing a dangerous, heady mix of desire and independence. In a small village bar she drinks kirsch and steels herself for the ride, wearing leather but riding with no helmet, pushing speed and risk to the limit. The journey ends in tragedy when a truck swerves into her path, hurling her head-first through the windscreen of an oncoming car, which then crashes into the truck.
