He began his professional journey with Sunderland in July 1980, making his senior debut in October 1981 and quickly establishing himself as a reliable goal‑scorer, finishing as the club’s top scorer in the 1983‑84 season. After more than a hundred appearances for the Black Cats, West transferred to Watford in March 1985, where he topped the scoring charts in 1985‑86 with sixteen league goals and earned a reputation for his aerial prowess and determined ground play.
