Romy Schneider was born Rosemarie Magdalena Albach on 23 September 1938 in Vienna, then part of the German Reich. She grew up in a theatrical family; her father Wolf Albach‑Retty was a celebrated actor of Vienna's Volkstheater and her mother Magda Schneider a popular film star. From an early age she attended private schools in Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, and spent much of her childhood at the family estate in Schönau am Königssee under the care of a governess. The divorce of her parents in 1945 placed her mother at the centre of her upbringing and career planning, and at fifteen she appeared in her first feature When the White Lilacs Bloom Again (1953) under the name Romy Schneider‑Albach. Her breakout came with the role of Empress Elisabeth in the Sissi trilogy (1955‑1957), which turned her into a beloved icon across German‑speaking Europe. Seeking greater artistic challenges, she moved to France in the late 1950s, where she fell in love with fellow actor Alain Delon during the filming of Christine and later built a distinguished Francophone career with directors such as Luchino Visconti, Claude Sautet and Bertrand Tavernier. Notable French films include The Things of Life (1970), L’important c’est d’aimer (1974) and Une histoire simple (1978), the latter earning her a second César Award for Best Actress. Her personal life was marked by two marriages—first to German director Harry Meyen (1966‑1975) and later to her private secretary Daniel Biasini (1975‑1981)—and by the tragic loss of her son David in 1981, an event that deepened her well‑known struggles with alcohol. Romy Schneider died of cardiac arrest on 29 May 1982 in Paris at the age of 43, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most celebrated and influential actresses of post‑war European cinema.
