Innocents with Dirty Hands 1975

Louis Wormser [Rod Steiger] is a wealthy man who leads a quiet life in Saint-Tropez with his beautiful young wife Julie Wormser [Romy Schneider]. The marriage is strained: Louis battles cardiac problems and alcohol, and the couple sleep in separate rooms. Their tension deepens as Julie is drawn toward freedom and excitement, and a spark begins to flicker when Julie years later becomes involved with Jeff Marle [Paolo Giusti], a writer who represents a possibility of escape from the stifling routine of their life together.

Together they hatch a dangerous, calculated plan. Julie will knock Louis unconscious, Jeff will dump the corpse off a boat, and then Jeff will lie low in Italy while the scandal swirls around the Wormsers. For a while it seems like a bold, if morbid, solution to their marital malaise. But the scheme spirals out of control: Jeff disappears after the deed, and with him disappears Louis’s money as well, leaving Julie not only bereft of husband and lover but also under police surveillance as a suspect in the mystery surrounding the missing man and the vanished funds.

Louis reappears unexpectedly, seemingly recovered and sober, insisting that he knocked Jeff unconscious, took him to the boat, forced out a written confession, and killed him. He now presents himself as a changed husband, eager to repair the damaged bond with Julie, and the two share an intimate reunion, as if time had stood still and forgiveness could erase the past.

Yet the drama rebounds with a brutal twist: Jeff returns, armed with a pistol, asserting that Louis could not face killing him on the night the plan was supposed to work. He demands Julie and the money, provoking a confrontation that tests Julie’s loyalties once again. Julie refuses to be drawn back into the deadlock, and Louis suffers a fatal heart attack in the ensuing tension. In a final, harrowing moment, as Jeff makes a last, violent move toward Julie, the police arrive and arrest him, sealing the fate of a plot built on deceit, desire, and a dangerous longing for a life beyond control.
