Eddie Chapman, portrayed by Christopher Plummer, is a suave safecracker who earns a notorious reputation with the Gelignite Gang. He pulls off a string of daring break-ins across late-1930s London until one job on the Channel Island of Jersey goes wrong and lands him in prison. When war breaks out and Jersey is occupied by German forces, Chapman uses his skills to offer his services to the enemy, hoping to stay useful and out of harm’s way. After a daring ruse that fakes his execution, the Germans smuggle him into occupied France, where, under the watchful eye of his handler, Colonel Baron von Grunen, [Yul Brynner], he trains as a spy. He also becomes romantically involved with Helga Lindstrom, [Romy Schneider], known as the Countess. He is closely watched by ex-policeman Colonel Steinhäger, [Gert Fröbe], Grunen’s subordinate.
On his first mission, the operation is framed as parachuting into England, but it is a test of loyalty. He is dropped again, this time directly on English soil, and heads to the British authorities to verify his extraordinary tale. After convincing them that he means business, they accept him as a double agent for Britain in exchange for a full pardon. A coded order arrives from his German superiors to “Blow up Vickers”—an aircraft factory—yet the British stage a counterfeited strike using dummy explosives and camouflage to fool the Nazis into believing the job is done.
Back in France, Chapman earns the Iron Cross from the German side for his work. In 1944, during a return trip to England, he helps feed the Germans false information designed to misdirect the V-1 “buzz bombs” away from populated areas and key targets. The war ends with VE Day, and Chapman learns that his pardon has been granted; his criminal record is reportedly wiped clean during the Blitz.
