In England during World War II, Alice Charlesworth, Glenda Jackson, runs a farm in the countryside while her husband is away after being taken prisoner by the Japanese. One day a young man named Barton, Brian Deacon, roams the fields and helps around the farm; the two become friends, then lovers. Barton decides to desert the army, and Alice offers him refuge in exchange for helping run the farm in her husband’s absence. Barton even helps ease the burden of the farm, and in a grim moment, puts Alice’s ailing dog out of its misery with her husband’s shotgun.
