Ralph Waite (June 22, 1928 – February 13, 2014) was an American actor whose rugged charm and paternal gravitas made him a beloved screen father in several acclaimed series. Born in White Plains, New York, he was the eldest of five children to Ralph H. Waite, a construction engineer, and Esther Mitchell Waite, and he graduated from White Plains Senior High School in 1946 before serving two years in the U.S. Marine Corps. After his service he earned a bachelor’s degree at Bucknell University, worked briefly as a social worker, and then pursued a master’s at Yale Divinity School, becoming an ordained Presbyterian minister and a religious editor at Harper & Row. Despite this promising clerical path, Waite felt a pull toward the stage, joining the Peninsula Players summer theater in 1963 and debuting on Broadway as a minister in Marathon ’33. Throughout the 1960s he built a solid reputation Off‑Broadway, appearing in Blues for Mister Charlie and other productions, before transitioning to film with supporting roles in classics such as Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Five Easy Pieces (1970).

Waite’s breakthrough came when he was cast as John Walton Sr. on the television series The Waltons (1972‑1981), a role that earned him a place in the hearts of millions and occasional directing credits. He later portrayed paternal figures on NCIS (Jackson Gibbs) and Bones (Seeley Booth’s grandfather), and continued to appear in films like The Bodyguard (1992) and Cliffhanger (1993). A committed Democrat, Waite ran for Congress three times in California and remained an active political advocate, even introducing Jerry Brown in 1991. His personal life included three marriages—Beverly Waite, Kerry Shear Waite, and Linda East—and three daughters, one of whom tragically died of leukemia. After returning to organized religion in 2010, he joined the Spirit of the Desert Presbyterian Fellowship in Palm Desert, where he passed away in 2014 at the age of 85.
