Michael Learned (born April 9, 1939) is an American actress best known for her iconic role as Olivia Walton on the celebrated CBS drama The Waltons (1972‑1981). She was born in Washington, D.C., the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Duane “Betti” Hooper and Bruce Learned, a U.S. diplomat whose career took the family from a Connecticut farm to Austria when Michael was eleven, exposing her to European culture and the Arts Educational School in Tring, England. The unusual masculine first name was explained by her father’s comment that a boy would have been called Caleb, but she was a girl, so she received the name Michael. After returning to the United States, she pursued theater studies and quickly discovered a passion for performance, leading her to join regional productions and eventually the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco alongside her first husband, Peter Donat. Her breakthrough arrived when she was cast as the matriarch Olivia Walton, a role that earned her four Primetime Emmy Awards—three for The Waltons (1973, 1974, 1976) and a fourth for the short‑lived series Nurse (1982)—tying the record for most wins in the Lead Actress‑Drama category. The "Miss" prefix was initially added to her billing to avoid gender confusion, but it was dropped after the show’s early success, reflecting her growing recognition. Over the next decades she diversified her portfolio with film appearances in Touched by Love (1980), Power (1986) and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993), as well as guest spots on series such as Scrubs and The Young and the Restless. She also returned to the stage, starring in touring productions of On Golden Pond and taking the title role in Driving Miss Daisy for Innovation Theatre Works in 2008 and the Judson Theatre Company in 2013. In her personal life, Learned married four times—Peter Donat, Glen Chadwick, William Parker IV, and lawyer John Doherty—and is the mother of three sons, including actor Lucas Donat. A candid chronicler of her own struggles, she wrote in 2002 that she hit "rock bottom" before being cast in The Waltons and achieved sobriety in 1977, a milestone that she credits with launching a lifelong spiritual journey. Most recently she returned to television in the Netflix limited series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022), portraying Catherine Dahmer, demonstrating her enduring versatility and commitment to her craft.
