James Quinn, feeling a heavy weight from selling his family business to a larger competitor, retreats to The Centennial Club—a summer resort for Michigan’s old-money families that his kin have belonged to for generations. He arrives to find the club steeped in tradition, and is told by the longtime manager Jack Olson that his old Harvard roommate, Vernor Stanton, another legacy member, is in residence with a new wife and that this weekend will host the grand Centennial Day celebration, a rite meant to open a century-old time capsule buried by their ancestors. The news lands with a sting: Vernor reportedly wants James gone, and the club’s social machinery begins to move behind James’s back.

As James investigates, he discovers Vernor’s troubling mood and a basement shooting range that looks more like a stage for defiance than sport. When Vernor challenges him to a duel, James is injured, only to learn that the pistols carry wax bullets. Vernor’s companion, Janey, stumbles upon their exchange, puzzled by their odd behavior. Vernor later confides to Janey that he despises the attitudes of the older members yet plans to stay, quipping that quitting “is no way to resign from original sin.” The trio’s private games spill out into the public sphere during an upcoming parade for a visiting politician: they sneak onto a bus intended for Centennial Day visitors, ransack the food and liquor, and when the rightful passengers attempt boarding, Vernor locks them out and commands James to drive away, bleeping out into the crowd with a mocking moon.

That evening, the Centennial Club crowd gathers under the leadership of Canon Pritchard, Senator Olds, historian Spengler, elder Newcombe and the aristocratic Fortesque. Vernor fans the flames of tension by spreading a rumor that Jack has been poaching in the off-season to rally support for ousting him. James, meanwhile, stumbles upon Janey sunbathing nude, a fact Vernor delicately exploits later, hinting at the forbidden draw between them. That night, Janey secretly reveals to James that she and Vernor are not truly married, adding a conspiratorial bite to the weekend’s decadence.

James learns that Vernor fired Jack the night before, a point Vernor defends by claiming he offered a generous severance, a gesture meant to placate the old guard. Enter Earl Olive, a coarse local, who shows up at the lodge claiming he was hired as Jack’s replacement. After the initial revulsion, the old members decide to tolerate Earl, focusing on the upcoming anniversary, even as the outsider’s presence unsettles the carefully stitched social order. Earl soon hosts a raucous barbecue with bikers and locals at his nearby cottage, drawing the club’s attention—and later, their fear—toward a line they hadn’t anticipated crossing. Vernor, who reveals that hiring Earl was his idea, urges the new caretaker to come to his shooting gallery, testing loyalties and nerve.

A violent duel follows, and Earl takes a rubber bullet to the mouth and chest, leaving him bloodied but unbowed, storming off in anger. The next morning, Earl retaliates by blowing up a dam, nearly drowning James as he fishes. The club’s men rally their guns to hunt Earl, but Vernor refuses to intervene, savoring the chaos as if it were a perverse hunt. While the men are away, Earl’s faction captures club member Russell, tar and feathering him upon return. Vernor returns to Earl with a cash payout—$20,000—and tells everyone to go, yet the truth about Earl’s whereabouts remains elusive to the rest of the members. The tension builds as Vernor warns of danger, while the older, militarized faction grows more jittery and impulsive.

Midnight of Centennial Day arrives, and the time capsule is finally unearthed. The lid reveals a large, unfolded photograph that shows the club founders with their ancestors engaged in an orgy, shattering every sense of propriety and history that the club once championed. Shock gives way to raw, unsteady impulse as the members tear off their clothes and surrender to a mass, decadent ceremony. Vernor returns with the club’s machine gun and trains it on the tent where the revelry continues, demanding to know whether James will stand with him in quashing the debauchery or join the spectacle. He challenges James to a final duel, this time expecting wax bullets again, but James discovers the pistol is loaded with real ammunition; Vernor collapses and dies.

As the helicopter arrives, James and Janey stand in stunned silence, surrounded by a scene no one could have anticipated: a century of tradition undone by their own hands, and a town’s elite left to reckon with what they’ve become. The night ends with the realization that the roots of power, privilege, and performative honor have been exposed, leaving questions about loyalty, appetite for control, and the cost of a legacy that no longer feels safe to protect.
