Geoff Hayward arrives as a Tasmanian recruit Geoff Hayward, and his rough start tests the patience of the club’s dedicated coach Laurie Holden. The team flounders, and the coach’s tenure grows precarious as the season drags on, turning every game into a test of will and strategy. The club president Ted Parker is forced to resign after an assault on a stripper, a scandal that could have been kept quiet but for relentless backstabbing from board members, especially Jock Reily and Gerry Cooper. With the leadership fractured, the atmosphere around the club becomes combustible, and loyalties are tested as rumors swirl about who is really pulling the strings.

Laurie discovers that the board intends to sack him, a consequence of a long-held grudge from [Jock Reily] who used to coach Laurie and resented his ascent toward breaking the club’s cherished records. A pivotal moment arrives when Laurie reveals that Jock was intoxicated during a Grand Final, a confession that leads to Jock’s dismissal as coach and stains his influence, while Jock works to undermine the club from the outside in a last-ditch bid to reclaim power.

As the old guard fades, Geoff begins to find his footing, and his improving play starts to lift the team. The club rallies, the performances click into place, and a genuine turnaround takes shape. The players gain momentum, the wins come more freely, and the team edges its way into a Grand Final, ultimately beating Fitzroy in a hard-fought clash that marks a stunning reversal of fortune.
