Last Summer 1969

On Fire Island, two youths, Dan Bruce Davison and Peter Richard Thomas, form a tentative friendship with Sandy Barbara Hershey, a young woman who has found an injured seagull on the beach. As they nurse the bird back to health, the trio spends time exploring alcohol, marijuana, and their own evolving sexuality, testing boundaries and navigating the pull between freedom and responsibility. Dan and Peter, both virgins, express interest in having sex with Sandy, whom they believe might also be a virgin, setting a charged dynamic within the group.

Rhoda Catherine Burns, a younger teenager, enters their circle and confides that her mother died in a drowning accident. Her presence adds a new layer to the relationships, and she and Peter share a kiss, deepening the ache and curiosity that mark their holiday from home.

One day, the group confronts a harsh moment when Sandy kills the seagull after it bites her, a stark reminder of how quickly impulse can turn dangerous. They escalate their schemes with a cruel prank: they arrange a dinner date with an older man, Anibal Ernesto Gonzalez through a computer dating service, get him drunk, and abandon him to a group of local bullies, ignoring Rhoda’s clear protests.

Tensions mount as Rhoda grows more uneasy with the trio’s actions, culminating in a devastating sequence in the forest near the beach. Dan rapes Rhoda, with the others present as the assault unfolds. Afterward, Sandy and Dan are seen walking away, while Peter stands alone, staring out at the ocean, left to reckon with the consequences of what has happened.
