Rainer Werner Fassbinder (31 May 1945 – 10 June 1982) was a seminal German filmmaker, dramatist and actor whose work became a cornerstone of the New German Cinema movement. Born in the small Bavarian town of Bad Wörishofen three weeks after the Allied occupation, he grew up in a turbulent post‑war environment that would later inform his relentless critique of German society, the legacy of Nazism and the economic miracle. By the mid‑1960s Fassbinder had already founded the avant‑garde Anti‑Theater troupe, directing dozens of stage productions and developing a tight‑knit ensemble that included Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann, Harry Baer and Peer Raben, many of whom appeared in his films for the rest of his career. His first feature, Love Is Colder Than Death (1969), announced a prodigious output: over forty feature films, dozens of television dramas, twenty‑four plays and a multitude of short works were created before his untimely death at age 37. Fassbinder’s cinema blended Hollywood melodrama with stark social commentary, often exploring themes of love, exploitation and the “exploitability of feelings”. International breakthroughs came with The Merchant of Four Seasons (1972) and Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974), the latter winning the International Critics Prize at Cannes and establishing his reputation beyond Germany. Later masterpieces such as The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979), Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980) and Veronika Voss (1982) demonstrated his ability to merge epic storytelling with intimate character studies, while films like The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and Querelle confronted homoerotic desire with unflinching honesty. Beyond his artistic achievements, Fassbinder’s personal life was famously turbulent; he married actress Ingrid Caven in 1970, maintained high‑profile relationships with both men and women, and lived a hedonistic lifestyle marked by heavy drug use. His sudden death from a cocaine and barbiturate overdose on 10 June 1982 is often viewed as the symbolic end of the New German Cinema era. Despite his brief career, Fassbinder left an indelible legacy, influencing generations of filmmakers worldwide and cementing his status as one of the most important auteurs of the twentieth century.
