In Switzerland, Willie, an aspiring German singer, grows fond of Robert, a Jewish trainee conductor. Their romance unfolds against the shadow of a clandestine network that helps Jews and their money find safety in neutral Switzerland. Fearing that Robert’s relationship could jeopardize this lifeline, his wealthy father, David Mendelssohn, orders Willie deported, throwing their future into doubt.
Back in Germany, Willie finds protection under Henkel, a high-ranking Nazi official who uses the arrangement to push her career forward. Her performance of the song Lili Marleen becomes the army’s favorite, bringing her wealth and fame. With the danger of exposure looming, Robert returns to Germany under a false identity to recruit her for the network. She clings to her love for him and provides him with photo evidence of Nazi death camps in Poland, a stark reminder of the horrors they are trying to avert.
When Robert is seized by the Gestapo, Willie comes under suspicion but is ultimately cleared, and the net around them tightens with scrutiny. Robert’s father negotiates his son’s return to Switzerland, where he is married to a suitable Jewish girl, complicating the couple’s chances of a shared future.
As the war draws to a close, Willie manages to reach Switzerland once more, eagerly attending Robert’s first concert. Yet, despite the joy of reunion, there is no real hope of rekindling their romance, and the story settles into a quiet, unresolved melancholy.
