Margit Carstensen was a renowned German theatre and film actress whose career spanned more than five decades, beginning in the early 1960s and continuing well into the 2010s. Born on 29 February 1940 in Kiel, the daughter of a physician, she completed her Abitur in 1958 and then studied acting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, where she honed the skills that would later define her versatile stage presence. Her early professional work took her to provincial theatres in Kleve, Heilbronn, Münster and Braunschweig before she secured a four‑year engagement at Hamburg’s prestigious Deutsches Schauspielhaus in 1965, performing leading roles in works by John Osborne and the classic Spanish playwright Lope de Vega. In 1969 she joined the Theater am Goetheplatz in Bremen, where a fortuitous meeting with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder launched her into the national spotlight; she starred in his televised adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s The Coffee Shop (1970) and later embodied the infamous serial murderer Geesche Gottfried in the premiere of Fassbinder’s Bremen Freedom (1972). Throughout the 1970s she appeared in several of Fassbinder’s most celebrated films, notably The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) where she gave a haunting performance as the title character, and Martha (1974), Fear of Fear (1975), Mother Küsters’ Trip to Heaven (1975), Satan’s Brew (1976) and Chinese Roulette (1976). Her television work included roles in Fassbinder’s series Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day (1972) and the epic Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980). In the 1980s she expanded internationally, appearing in Andrzej Żuławski’s co‑production Possession (1981) and Agnieszka Holland’s Oscar‑nominated Angry Harvest (1985). By the late 1980s she developed fruitful collaborations with directors Werner Schroeter, Christoph Schlingensief and Leander Haußmann, starring in Schlingensief’s 100 Years of Adolf Hitler: The Last Hour in the Führerbunker (1989) as Magda Goebbels and earning the Bavarian Film Award for Best Actress for Scherbentanz (2002). Her later stage engagements took her to Stuttgart, Munich’s Kammerspiele, the Vienna Burgtheater and the Schauspielhaus Bochum, where she appeared in Shakespeare’s As You Like It (2008). Even into her seventies she remained active on German television, guest‑starring in the long‑running crime series Tatort in 2016, confirming her status as a persistent and adaptable figure in German performing arts.
