Lillete Dubey (born Lillete Keswani on 7 September 1953 in Pune, then part of Bombay State) is a celebrated Indian actress and theatre director whose career spans more than four decades across stage, television and film. She began her artistic journey in the early 1970s as a founding member of Barry John’s Theatre Action Group, a pivotal Delhi troupe that nurtured modern Indian theatre, and she remained active in that collective from its inception in 1973. In 1991 she established The Primetime Theatre Company, through which she has directed and performed in over thirty productions, introducing original Indian writing to audiences worldwide and earning accolades such as the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for Adhe Adhure. Dubey’s film debut came relatively late; after relocating to Mumbai in 1995, she appeared in Love You Hamesha (1999) and quickly rose to prominence with the role of Aunty Rose in Shyam Benegal’s Zubeidaa (2001) and the memorable mother‑figure in Mira Nair’s internationally acclaimed Monsoon Wedding the same year. She has since built a rich filmography that includes Baghban, Kal Ho Naa Ho, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, as well as award‑winning performances in Bow Barracks Forever and 3 Days to Go. On television and digital platforms she continues to appear in series such as Qubool Hai 2, showcasing her versatility across genres. Off‑stage, Dubey is noted for her academic background—holding an M.A. in English and a second master’s in mass communications—and for her dedication to mentoring young talent. Married to Ravi Dubey until his death in 2015, she is the mother of actresses Neha and Ira Dubey, and remains an influential figure in contemporary Indian performing arts.
