Ajay Devgn stars as Indraneel ‘Neel’ Mohan Thakur, a man on the autism spectrum who works as a waiter in a Shimla coffee shop and raises his daughter Gungun as a single parent. Gungun adores him and often resists going to school to stay close to her father.

Maya D. Trivedi, played by Esha Deol, came into Neel’s life when she needed someone, but after giving birth she disappeared, leaving Neel to raise Gungun alone for seven years.

Dayanath Trivedi, portrayed by Anupam Kher, travels to India to meet his granddaughter and soon becomes involved in Neel’s guardianship dispute.

With the help of the townspeople, Neel is connected to the lawyer Niti Sinha — Sushmita Sen — a single mother who is juggling her own struggles as her son Rahul won’t listen to her. Niti initially declines to take the case, but when Rahul befriends Neel, she changes her mind and agrees to represent him in the custody battle.

The custody fight uncovers the truth about Maya’s past: she had battled drug problems and died, a revelation that helps explain why she never returned.

Just as the case seems to tilt in Dayanath’s favor, there is a pivotal moment after a fifteen-minute recess when Niti presents marriage papers to the judge. The judge grants Neel custody of Gungun and recognizes Niti as her mother, with Rahul as her brother. Gungun accepts Niti as her mother, and Dayanath begins to soften, eventually accepting Neel as his son-in-law before returning to London.

Together, Neel, Niti, and their extended circle show how love, patience, and community support can shape a family, even when the odds seem daunting.
