Ila, portrayed by Nimrat Kaur, is a devoted housewife yearning for the affection of her husband, Rajeev. Striving to rekindle the lost romance in their marriage, she embarks on an endeavor to prepare delightful lunches for him. However, a twist of fate occurs when a lunchbox, meant for Rajeev, is mistakenly delivered to Saajan Fernandes, a middle-aged widower played by Irrfan Khan, who is on the verge of retirement from his accounting career.

Upon discovering the mix-up, Ila, guided by her thoughtful neighbor Mrs. Deshpande (voiced by Bharti Achrekar), takes a bold step. She decides to reach out to Saajan by writing a letter, including her husband’s favorite dish for that day. Thus begins a heartwarming correspondence between the two, igniting a connection as they share personal stories and emotions through the letters exchanged within their lunchboxes.

In his workplace, Saajan finds himself mentoring his successor, Aslam Sheikh, played by Nawaz. Initially hesitant to engage, Saajan’s perspective shifts as he learns about Sheikh’s challenging upbringing as an orphan who taught himself accounting. As they bond over shared experiences, Saajan even steps in to safeguard Sheikh’s job, ultimately serving as the best man at his wedding to Mehrunissa (Shruti Bapna).

As Ila comes to terms with Rajeev’s infidelity, her hopes for their marriage dissipate. In one of her heartfelt letters, she proposes a move to Bhutan, a place where life is said to be more affordable. In a twist, Saajan reciprocates her sentiments, suggesting they journey there together. Ila proposes a meeting at a well-known restaurant, but when Saajan fails to appear, he regretsfully reveals in his next letter that he had watched her from afar, feeling unworthy of approaching the vibrant young woman she is.

The story takes a poignant turn when Ila’s father succumbs to lung cancer, a moment that brings to light her mother’s own marital dissatisfaction. In a moment of reflection, Ila’s mother shares wisdom: “Sometimes, the wrong train takes us to the right station.” Later, upon discovering Saajan’s retirement and departure to Nashik, Ila pens a farewell letter, declaring her intent to leave Rajeev and relocate to Bhutan with her daughter, Yashvi.

Just as fate would have it, Saajan wrestles with his decision while en route to Nashik, ultimately deciding to return to Mumbai. The film culminates in a touching scene where Ila awaits Yashvi’s return from school, while Saajan makes his way to her home guided by the dabbawalas, who continue to play a crucial role in delivering the beloved lunchbox.
