My Brother… Nikhil 2005

Set against the sunlit shores of Goa from 1986 to 1994, this film traces the life of Nikhil Kapoor, Sanjay Suri a gifted swimmer who dominates the state circuit. His father Navin Kapoor, Victor Banerjee, raised him to be a sportsman—a dream he never realized himself. His elder sister Anamika, Juhi Chawla Mehta, teaches in a primary school and loves her brother dearly, while his mother Anita Rosario Kapoor, Lillete Dubey adores him and from her he inherits his artistic sensibility.

Everything changes when Nikhil is diagnosed with HIV. His life falls apart as he is removed from the swimming team and his parents throw him out. He is arrested simply because he is HIV positive, and Goa Public Health Act allows the government to isolate HIV-positive individuals, forcing separation from family and friends. The social stigma proves relentless, and the supportive circle around him grows thinner while fear and prejudice spread.

Amid the mounting pressure, the few who stand by him are his sister Anamika, Juhi Chawla Mehta, his friend Nigel, Purab Kohli, and Anamika’s boyfriend Sam. With the help of a determined lawyer, they secure Nikhil’s release and begin navigating the many barriers to his reintegration. Although work proves hard to come by at first, Nikhil eventually finds a way to contribute as a music teacher, channeling his talents into a form of resilience and purpose.

As Nikhil’s health declines, Anamika and Nigel spearhead a new AIDS assistance organization called People Positive, seeking to support others facing stigma and discrimination. Through these efforts, Nikhil is gradually reconciled with his mother and, in time, with his father as well. The family’s bonds endure the strain of illness and prejudice, ultimately leading to a shift in how they view Nigel and the people around them.

In the final, poignant passages of the story, the strength of chosen family and community stands in contrast to the cruelty of prejudice. After Nikhil’s death, his parents begin to treat Nigel like a son, signaling a hard-won acceptance born from tragedy, care, and shared memory. The film leaves viewers with a quiet, enduring message about love, inclusion, and the enduring fight against stigma.
