Ed Harris, born Edward Allen Harris, is an American actor and filmmaker renowned for his performances in several critically acclaimed films. Some of his notable works include 'Apollo 13' (1995), 'The Truman Show' (1998), 'Pollock' (2000), and 'The Hours' (2002), each of which earned him Academy Award nominations. Harris's career spans over decades with contributions in leading and supporting roles across numerous films and TV series like Creepshow (1982),The Right Stuff (1983), The Abyss (1989),Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), and Westworld (2016–2022). He also directed the Western film 'Appaloosa' (2008). In addition to acting, Harris has directed various endeavours. His role as Senator John McCain in the TV movie 'Game Change' (2012) won him the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Harris was born in Englewood, New Jersey. He grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, in a middle-class Presbyterian family. He discovered his interest in acting while studying drama at the University of Oklahoma and subsequently brought it to life at the California Institute of the Arts. His first major role in a film came with 'Borderline' in 1980. In 1983, his portrayal of astronaut John Glenn in 'The Right Stuff' elevated his fame. Further, his role as Major Steve Arnold in the Ronald Harwood play 'Taking Sides' in 1996 took him to Broadway. After making his directorial debut with 'Pollock' in 2000, he went on to direct the Western film 'Appaloosa' in 2008. Harris received an honorary degree from Muhlenberg College in 2015 and also had a star named in his honour on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that same year.
