Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born on December 13, 1925 in West Plains, Missouri, to Hazel Victoria (née McCord) and Loren Wayne “Cookie” Van Dyke. Raised in Danville, Illinois, he displayed an early love for performance, singing in the a‑capella choir and acting in school productions before leaving high school to serve as a radio announcer in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, Van Dyke entered the entertainment world as a nightclub comic, forming the mime duo “Eric and Van – the Merry Mutes,” and later working as a radio DJ and television emcee. His Broadway breakthrough came in 1959 with the revue The Girls Against the Boys, followed by a Tony‑winning turn as Albert Peterson in the original production of Bye Bye Birdie (1960).
