Famous New York detective Nick Charles found himself swept off his feet by the charming heiress Nora, who hailed from an esteemed upper-class lineage. In a quest for a more relaxed lifestyle, he decided to abandon his detective career, relocating to San Francisco where he immersed himself in a world filled with joy, playful antics, and almost ceaseless drinking. Their life together was a beautiful escape until one fateful vacation brought them back to New York, where they would inadvertently stumble into a tangled web of mystery.

Upon their return, an unsettling twist awaited as their old friend Clyde Wynant, a rather slim middle-aged businessman, was reported missing. Suspicion loomed over Clyde regarding the murder of his girlfriend, Julia Wolf, along with the alleged kidnapping of his ex-wife’s current husband, Chris Jorgenson. Despite being deeply in love with his wife and relishing in their newfound leisure, Nick had no aspirations of returning to detective work. However, the world around him had other plans. The media relentlessly pursued him, a gangster named Joe Morelli aimed bullets in his direction, and the continuous antics of Clyde’s family mocked Nick at every turn. It was clear that Nick’s peaceful existence was at risk, prompting him to reluctantly dust off his detective cap simply to find some peace.

Draped in a facade of a carefree, intoxicated man, Nick began to unravel the enigma surrounding Clyde’s disappearance. He quickly realized that Clyde hadn’t been seen for over three months. His lawyer, MacCaulay, received cryptic instructions to funnel substantial amounts of money to Julia, who claimed to be acting on Clyde’s behalf while appearing to be involved in a scandalous affair, allegedly siphoning funds through her gangster lover, Joe Morelli.

The Wynant family was as peculiar as you might expect. Clyde’s dalliance with Julia left his wife, Mimi, with plenty of justification for seeking a divorce and an endless string of opportunities to harass him for money, even after her marriage to Chris, a man whose financial dependence on both her and her ex-husband was glaring. Clyde’s children, Gilbert, an eccentric book lover, and Dorothy, were bewilderingly preoccupied with their complicated family dynamics. It was Dorothy who first approached Nick, seeking his assistance amid the chaos.

Mimi’s visit to see Julia on the day of her murder was pivotal, as she was the first to discover Julia’s lifeless body. Mimi recognized a watch chain clutched in Julia’s hand as belonging to Clyde, threatening to use it against him. Understanding Mimi’s devotion to Chris, Nick cleverly utilized Chris’ disappearance to compel Mimi into relinquishing the damaging evidence.

Lacking definitive proof to back his theories, Nick put on a pretense of taking his beloved terrier, Asta, on a casual evening stroll and secretly infiltrated Clyde’s place of business. There, he encountered old bookkeeper Tanner, an ex-con once caught by Nick, sneaking around suspiciously. However, Asta had more pressing matters and unearthed a dead body encased beneath the store’s floorboards.

An analysis of the garb upon the corpse led the police to surmise it was the body of a portly individual named Rosengreen, a known rival of Clyde. The story made headlines, prompting the suspects to lower their guard, giving Nick a golden opportunity. He organized an extravagant dinner gathering, where the guests, including the Wynant family, Tommy, Jorgenson and his real wife, Joe Morelli, and MacCaulay, were escorted by police vehicles, with half of the waitstaff donned in police uniforms.

In a classic moment over dinner, filled with his signature cocktails, Nick dramatically revealed the true identity of the skeleton—Clyde himself. He exposed the murderer’s plot to deceive the police, indicating a conspiracy with Julia to rob Wynant of his assets. The atmosphere turned tense when Mimi left to confront Julia regarding their collusion for further financial gain. Concerned that Julia might betray him, the murderer eliminated her—pressuring Mimi into fabricating testimonies that claimed she had seen Clyde.

Nick unveiled the shocking truth to Mimi: her marriage to Jorgenson was nullified due to his previous union, making her eligible for Clyde’s fortune. Faced with the prospect of greater gain by spilling the truth, Mimi was poised to reveal everything when a gunshot echoed through the air—fired by MacCaulay.

With the burden of being a murderer’s daughter finally lifting, Dorothy found love and ventured off to her honeymoon with Tommy. Meanwhile, Nick, Nora, and Asta prepared for their own departure, boarding a train back to their blissful, carefree life in San Francisco, where the sun would shine bright once more.
