Portly private detective Brad Runyan, [J. Scott Smart], is hired by dental nurse Jane Adams, [Jayne Meadows], to investigate the unexplained murder of her boss. The case quickly points toward the missing patient Roy Clark, [Rock Hudson], last seen being driven from his appointment by the chauffeur of probable gangster Gene Gordon, [John Russell]. Runyan tracks down Pat Boyd, [Julie London], Clark’s former lover and briefly his wife, who reveals that Clark had spent time in jail. The police tell Runyan that Clark’s offense was the theft of half a million dollars, money that remains unrecovered. In jail, Clark befriended a cellmate named Ed Deets, [Emmett Kelly], a circus clown, and Clark whispered secrets that could shake the whole case. On release, Deets claimed Clark’s share of the loot from Gordon, the heist’s organizer, to help fund his own dream of owning a circus.

Deets’s side of the deal was to eliminate Clark, and he left the corpse in a truck destroyed by fire. When he realized that Clark had undergone dental treatment, creating dental records that could identify him, Deets killed the dentist and Jane Adams to cover his tracks. Runyan locates Deets, and in a final shootout, Deets is fatally wounded and dies in his own circus ring.
