William Horatio Powell (July 29, 1892 – March 5, 1984) was an esteemed American actor who made a significant mark in the film industry, chiefly distinguished for his successful movie career. He was primarily noted for his pairing with Myrna Loy in 14 films, which included the famous Thin Man series based on the Nick and Nora Charles characters conceptualized by Dashiell Hammett. Powell's performing prowess led his name to be nominated for the 'Best Actor' Academy Award thrice: for The Thin Man (1934), My Man Godfrey (1936), and Life with Father (1947).

After graduating high school, Powell explored his passion for acting by joining the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. His Hollywood voyage began in 1922, with a Sherlock Holmes production. His remarkable voice became a powerful asset in his acting career during the time of transitioning to talkies. Powell received his first Academy Award nomination for 'The Thin Man'. His other notable performances include in The Great Ziegfeld (1936), and My Man Godfrey (1937). Powell lived a long acting career until his last role in Mister Roberts in 1955. Off-screen, Powell married thrice: to Eileen Wilson, Carole Lombard, and Diana Lewis. He battled against rectal cancer, which, after aggressive treatments, led to full remission.
