Some Kind of a Nut 1969

Fred Amidon, a Manhattan bank teller, faces a personal upheaval when his wife Rachel Amidon files for divorce. He already has a new fiancée, Pamela Anders, and the two are gearing up for a vacation together, hoping to leave the turmoil behind.

During a sunny picnic in the park, Fred Amidon is stung on the chin by a bee. The sting hurts him to shave, so he lets a full beard grow, turning his normal clean-cut look into something rugged and unexplored. This small allergy to shaving becomes a bold statement of independence, and when he returns to the bank, his boss orders him to shave, insisting on conformity once more. Pamela doesn’t like the beard, but Fred is tired of bending to everyone else’s desires and demands. He refuses, and the consequence is swift and harsh: he is fired.

In the wake of his firing, Fred’s stance becomes a catalyst for a broader reaction at the bank. Colleagues rally to his defense, and the men around him start growing beards in solidarity. What begins as a workplace dispute spirals into a public spectacle, as picket lines form outside the bank with signs carried by coworkers, hippies, and jazz musicians sporting beards. Before long, Fred is catapulted into overnight media coverage, a symbol of individual defiance against social expectations.

Rachel is impressed by the new backbone and fortitude she sees in him, while Pamela disapproves and fears losing control of the situation. The power shift intensifies when Pamela drugs Fred’s wine and has her brothers shave him. He awakens to a scene of chaos and shorn faces, discovering that their work has been half-finished, leaving his beard partially removed and his dignity questioned. He bolts, running away on foot, only half-dressed—wearing nothing but underwear and shoes.

The chase ends with a police arrest and a brief confinement in a psychiatric ward, a low point in an escalating farce. Yet help arrives in the form of Rachel, who rescues him and helps them find common ground again. The couple reconciles, and Fred finally shaves the beard, a sign that he never intended to keep it in the first place. In the end, the beard that sparked a rebellion fades away, leaving Fred back to his own terms and true self, with a renewed sense of who he is beyond other people’s expectations.
