Deposed by revolution in his homeland of Estrovia, King Shahdov, played by [Charlie Chaplin], arrives in New York City almost broke after his securities are stolen by his own prime minister. He seeks to contact the Atomic Energy Commission to pitch ideas for using atomic power to build a utopian future, a dream that blends politics with science and the promise of a better world.
At a televised dinner party, Shahdov reveals that he has some experience in the theatre. He is approached to appear in television commercials but does not like the idea. Later, he does appear in several commercials for the money, a small but revealing concession to the realities of survival in a new country.
