Ray is picked up from a psychiatric hospital and placed into the care of his devoted brother Pete, with whom he will share a cramped West London flat. Pete works long hours as a chef in a cafe that shifts from a traditional greasy spoon by day to a trendy, buzzing eatery by night, a business he inherited from his father, and he must juggle work with watching over Ray and monitoring his medication.
Despite his diagnosis, Ray is intelligent and outgoing. He soon falls for Laura, a Glaswegian woman who is in the process of breaking up with her abusive boyfriend. Laura is drawn to Ray’s spontaneity and childlike sense of fun, a warmth she has rarely found elsewhere. Around this time, Mandy—Pete’s partner—enters the picture as he begins a relationship with her.
As Ray’s relationship blossoms, his grip on the prescribed medication begins to loosen; he starts trusting the soothing power of love more than the routine of tablets, and eventually stops taking them. This decision reverberates through all three relationships: it strains the bond between the brothers, changes the dynamic between Ray and Laura, and unsettles Pete and Mandy’s budding romance. Ray’s illness brings disruption, fear, and distress to those close to him, yet the film centers on the fragile, stubborn, and ultimately redemptive connection between the brothers. Pete endures long-suffering frustration, yet his deep, unwavering commitment helps prevent Ray from harming himself or others.
