On a snowy Christmas Eve, a pair of anxious young children eagerly anticipate Santa Claus, Hal Smith, and the gifts that they will be receiving. Their grandfather, Dick Van Dyke, narrates a poetic fable that seeks to illuminate the true nature of the holidays for them in a gentle, timeless way.
The tale centers on an outrageously overindulged, bratty 5-year-old named Jeremy Creek, Miko Hughes. His mild and intimidated parents, Mr. Creek Phil Proctor and Mrs. Creek Melinda Peterson, struggle to set boundaries as warnings from neighbors mount and a large crack in the wall highlights the strain within their home. The boy’s tantrums grow louder when his desires aren’t met, and the story follows how his stubborn behavior is shaped by a household that has caved to every demand.
Frustration peaks when Jeremy decides to draft Santa a lengthy and demanding wish list—an inventory of all the presents he does not yet own. Santa, taking the list at face value and thinking it represents many children, gazes at a map and discovers an impoverished swamp town named “Jeremy Creek.” He realizes he has never delivered presents there before, and, moved by what he learns from the outside world, resolves to make amends for his past absences with a new mission.
On Christmas morning, the boy is crestfallen to find no gifts beneath the tree, while a televised news broadcast shows the penniless children of the town Jeremy Creek receiving a flood of presents. At first anger gives way to a dawning compassion as Jeremy begins to grasp the impact of his own greed. In a heartfelt moment, Santa visits Jeremy to apologize for the mix-up and, recognizing the boy’s newfound generosity, invites him to help deliver gifts on future Christmas Eves. Jeremy agrees, donating many of his own toys and stepping into a role that lets him assist Santa year after year, until he grows too large to ride in the sleigh.
The elder storyteller explains that Santa chooses new helpers every few years, keeping the tradition alive with fresh faces and hopeful hearts. The two grandchildren, including a young granddaughter Ashley Johnson, take the message to heart and begin to question what they once wished for. They wonder if one of them could someday become Santa’s next helper as the grandfather quietly contemplates his own possible future—his mailbox bearing the name that reveals a surprising truth: the grandfather is, in fact, Jeremy himself, grown older and wiser.
