Edward Barry Kelley (born August 19, 1908 in Chicago, Illinois) was a towering figure of American stage and screen, standing six feet four inches tall and weighing roughly 230 pounds. After completing his studies at the Goodman School of Drama—now part of DePaul University—Kelley launched his acting career in the 1930s, quickly becoming a reliable character actor on Broadway. He created the role of Ike in the original production of Oklahoma! and appeared in a string of notable productions including Within the Gates, Parnell, Saint Joan, and Hamlet. His imposing physical presence made him a natural fit for roles that demanded authority, and he frequently portrayed judges, detectives, and police officers even in his early stage work. By the late 1940s he transitioned to film, debuting in Boomerang (1947) and solidifying his screen persona as a stalwart law‑enforcement figure.

During the golden age of Hollywood, Kelley amassed an extensive filmography that spanned more than two decades, appearing in classics such as The Asphalt Jungle (1950) where he played Lt. Ditrich, The Tall Stranger (1957) as Hardy Bishop, and the politically charged The Manchurian Candidate (1962) where he portrayed the Secretary of Defense. His television résumé was equally impressive, with guest spots on westerns like Bonanza and crime dramas such as Perry Mason. Notable TV roles included the recurring character Jim Rafferty on The Tom Ewell Show and Sheriff Vic Crandall on Petticoat Junction. Kelley’s final screen appearance came in 1969’s The Extraordinary Seaman before he retired from acting. He passed away on June 5, 1991 in Woodland Hills, California at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of dependable, authoritative performances that continue to enrich classic American cinema and television.
