Carolyn Crawford, a five-year-old girl, disappears while picking flowers on her way to school, vanishing into an abandoned, overgrown well. Her parents seek help from Sheriff Ben Kellogg to locate her, and the town’s mood shifts as rumors surface across racial lines. A white stranger, Claude Packard, is arrested on suspicion of involvement.
Claude, a mining engineer visiting his uncle Sam Packard, a respected local businessman, tries to use his influence to secure his nephew’s release. This move inflames tensions, and when Sam is confronted by Carolyn’s relatives outside the police station, he suffers a heart attack, which is reported among white residents as a racial attack. Soon, mobs from both communities clash, and the situation threatens to deteriorate into widespread violence.
The sheriff asks the mayor, Jim, to secure state assistance and mobilize volunteers to quell the disturbances, particularly around Sam’s warehouse. Before events spiral further, Carolyn is found alive in the well but cannot be easily rescued. It takes Sam’s construction crew to sink a parallel shaft, with Claude lending his engineering expertise, to bring Carolyn safely back to her anxious family.
