Allan Darling Cuthbertson (7 April 1920 – 8 February 1988) was an Australian actor whose imposing presence and clipped diction made him a natural for stern‑faced military officers in British cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Perth, Western Australia, to Ernest and Isobel Ferguson (Darling) Cuthbertson, he entered the world of performance early, appearing on stage and radio before the outbreak of World War II. From 6 December 1941 to 1 July 1947 he served as a flight lieutenant with the Royal Australian Air Force, joining the 111 Air Sea Rescue Flight and acquiring authentic military bearing that would later inform his screen persona. After the war he migrated to Britain in 1947, instantly making his West End debut as Romeo at the Boltons and later tackling roles such as Laertes in Hamlet, Aimwell in The Beaux‑Stratagem, and Octavius Robinson in Man and Superman.

Cuthbertson’s film career blossomed with a succession of officer roles: a harried staff officer in Ice Cold in Alex (1958), Captain Eric Simpson in Tunes of Glory (1960), and the officious Colonel Cavendish in The 7th Dawn (1964). He appeared four times in The Avengers and lent his gravitas to beloved TV comedies, most famously as the mustachioed Colonel Hall in the iconic "Gourmet Night" episode of Fawlty Towers (1975). Regular guest spots on The Morecambe & Wise Show (1973‑1976), UFO, The Champions, and The Persuaders! showcased his versatility, while his later work included the serious role of Mr Chilwell in the acclaimed miniseries Edge of Darkness (1985) and a cameo in Michael Palin’s East of Ipswich (1987). He married Dr Gertrude Willner, a Czech refugee turned teacher, and they adopted one son. Cuthbertson died in Surbiton, Greater London, on 8 February 1988, leaving a legacy of over four decades of disciplined, memorable performances.
