Donald Daniel Houston (6 November 1923 – 13 October 1991) was a Welsh character actor whose career spanned three and a half decades of British film and television. Born at 10 Thomas Street in the mining village of Clydach Vale, near Tonypandy, he was the elder son of Alexander Houston, a Scottish footballer, and Elsie M. Jones, who ran a milk round. After his mother’s death when he was twenty‑nine, Donald and his younger brother, future actor Glyn Houston, were raised by their grandmother while their father sought work abroad. Donald left school to work at a local colliery, but his passion for performance led him to join the Pilgrim Players in 1940, and he later served as a rear gunner and radio officer in the Royal Air Force during World II. Early stage experience and wartime service forged a disciplined work ethic that would define his screen presence. His film debut came in 1949 with The Blue Lagoon, opposite Jean Simmons, and the same year he co‑starred with Alec Guinness in A Run for Your Money, both box‑office successes that launched his screen career. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Houston became synonymous with authoritative figures, especially military officers, appearing in classics such as The Longest Day (1962), 633 Squadron (1964) and Where Eagles Dare (1968). He could also shift effortlessly to comedy, delivering a memorable performance as Taffy Evans in Doctor in the House (1954) and as the blustery First Officer Jonathan Howett in Carry On Jack (1963). Although he occasionally took journeyman roles in genre pictures like Maniac (1963) and Tales That Witness Madness (1973), he consistently sought quality parts that showcased his versatile Welsh accent, sometimes softened into an English public‑school tone. Houston married Brenda Hogan in 1949 and fathered one daughter, Sian. He retired from acting in 1984 and succumbed to a stroke in Coimbra, Portugal, on 13 October 1991.
