The Fast Lady 1962

The Fast Lady opens with Murdoch Troon, a proud Scot who works for a local government authority on the edge of South London. His main thrill comes from cycling, a simple joy that defines his quiet, unassuming life. When an impatient driver cuts him off, Murdoch pursues the offender and discovers the driver is Charles Chingford, a domineering and acerbic force in the world of sports cars, running a flashy distributorship.

Chingford reluctantly pays for the damage to Murdoch’s bike, but the chance encounter sparks a much bigger possibility: Murdoch meets Claire, Chingford’s breathtaking daughter, and he is instantly smitten. Claire is full of life and glamour, confessing that she loves sports cars and would adore owning one—if only her father would permit it. She hints at a hidden longing beneath her charming, composed exterior, while her father, the “great dictator” of the phrase, looms as the ultimate gatekeeper who keeps that dream out of reach.

To win Claire’s heart, Murdoch is coaxed into buying a car by his friend and fellow lodger, Freddie, a chorus of a used-car salesman and a lovable con man. Freddie sees this as a golden scheme to curry favor with Chingford and simultaneously land his share of the deal. The prize is a legendary machine: a 1927 Bentley 4½ Litre Red Label Speed, painted in British Racing Green and nicknamed The Fast Lady.

Murdoch’s first driving lesson is in a humbler car, an Austin A40 Farina, with a nervous instructor named Wentworth, who tries to steady him but only adds to the comic chaos. Freddie promises to coach him himself, but the lessons quickly devolve into a string of disastrous misfires and nervous blunders that leave Murdoch more determined than ever.

Driven by love and stubborn pride, Murdoch bets Chingford that he can drive the Bentley. Chingford, a veteran racer, trusts that Murdoch cannot succeed and makes the wager. Murdoch does take Chingford for a spin and surprisingly loses the bet, but the twist comes when Chingford’s counter-bet—whether he can drive back home in under 30 minutes—goes awry. The result is a momentary triumph for Murdoch and a reluctant concession from Chingford: Claire should be allowed to go out with Murdoch.

The big test arrives on the day of the driving test. Freddie has supposedly arranged a “bent” examiner, but Murdoch draws the honest Bodley, an accidental twist of fate that raises the stakes. As the test nears its end, the car is seized by police to pursue a Jaguar driven by bank robbers. The wild chase whisks them through town and country, across a golf course, and leaves a trail of comedic disasters in its wake. Eventually the robbers are captured, and Bodley is furious, declaring that Murdoch has failed and is banned for life. Yet Chingford remains impressed by Murdoch’s driving skill, and in a surprising turn, he grants the couple permission to become engaged, signaling a hopeful ending built on courage, romance, and a shared passion for speed. > “her great dictator”
