Velayudhankutty is deeply in love with his cousin Amminikutty, but her father, Shankarankutty Menon, fiercely opposes their union. Shankarankutty Menon has a compulsive obsession to assault those who do not obey him, casting a shadow over the couple’s hopes for a peaceful life together.
To earn money and change his fortunes, Velayudhankutty heads to Palani. He sets out to find a man named Kunjikhader, who claims to be the supervisor of a leather factory, a line of work he says his father, Nanukuttan, has put in his mind. After several days of searching in Palani, aided by a horse-cart driver named Murukan, he discovers the startling truth: Kunjikhader is actually a pickpocket currently behind bars, using the ruse of factory supervisor to hide his stolen leather purses.
