In Coimbatore, Kannan, the pampered son of a retired commissioner, lives a life of luxury under his mother Lakshmi’s indulgence. His affluent upbringing has made him reckless with money, and his birthday plan to grant a free trip for everyone quickly reveals a chaotic streak in his character. When a fellow student, Manimekalai, declines the invitation to join the celebration to preserve her independence, their first encounter carries a hint of sharpness and rivalry.

Kannan is pulled into organizing the college’s silver jubilee function, and along with a friend, he meets Govindan, a drama artist who suggests staging a singing event. During a chance moment at a temple, he hears [Manimekalai] singing and is instantly impressed. He invites her to perform at the college function, but she again declines, wary of his reputation for misbehavior toward women. Not one to give up, Kannan pushes ahead, offering villagers incentives—sarees, silver pots, groceries—and even going to the lengths of laying a road in her locality and fixing the stubborn plumbing. He even wrestles with a neighbor to prove a point and sings to win her over, yet his efforts remain fruitless for the moment.

As time passes, Kannan’s feelings grow, but Manimekalai harbors strong reservations. Her father visits Kannan’s home, begging him to leave his daughter alone, and she files a complaint for eve-teasing. Kannan’s father refuses to bail him out, scolding him for flaunting wealth and power. In a fit of rage, Kannan schemes to forcibly marry Manimekalai, but the plan backfires dramatically. His father confronts him about his irresponsibility and arrogance, and he urges Lakshmi to reveal a long-hidden truth. A temple priest shocks Kannan by declaring that he is an adopted orphan, and Lakshmi collapses under the weight of the revelation.

Manimekalai relocates to Ooty seeking a fresh start. There she saves Raja, a businessman, from a near-fatal accident and becomes his personal assistant. Kannan and Govindan trail after her, intending to apologize, but fate has more in store. Kannan helps Raja recover a crucial money-containing suitcase from thieves, earning Raja’s respect and a job as his car driver. Unknown to him, Manimekalai is also working for Raja. Govindan secures a house with a broker in Ooty, landing in the same colony where Manimekalai resides, complicating the web of loyalties and past grievances.

To provoke Kannan, Manimekalai pretends to grow close to Raja, who misreads the signals and believes she has romantic feelings for him. She also falsely accuses Kannan of stealing cash from a table she had placed in a locker, leading to his dismissal from the job. The personal and public tensions escalate until Manimekalai, overwhelmed, attempts suicide, only to be saved by vigilant neighbors. Her father visits again, speaking of Kannan’s transformation. After Manimekalai leaves, tragedy strikes—Kannan’s mother dies, and his adopted father is paralyzed, a chain of misfortune that leaves Kannan to care for his ailing patriarch. The elder man eventually passes away, bequeathing his estate to Kannan, who then donates his wealth to orphanages, signaling a profound personal change.

Hearing her father’s words rekindle guilt in Manimekalai. Raja reveals that she had wrongly accused Kannan and discloses that he has rehired Kannan as the company bus conductor. This revelation helps Manimekalai recognize the truth of their past and the sincerity of Kannan’s reform. With newfound clarity, her feelings for him deepen into love. She starts using the company bus as a way to glimpse Kannan and even greets him on his birthday.

Just as the couple seems ready to move forward together, Raja abducts them both. In a surprising turn, Raja ultimately aids their reunion and gives them his blessings before stepping away. The film closes on a note of reconciliation, redemption, and a hopeful future for the two once-misunderstood hearts.
