Tulasi Radha is a village girl with a quiet, steadfast hope for love. One day she receives a letter from her cousin Subramani Mohan, a friend they were inseparable with in childhood, who has moved with his family to the city. The spark of their past friendship lights up once again as Tulasi imagines what might lie ahead, even as life carries on around her.

Subramani returns to the village to work on his college thesis about folk songs, and his presence rekindles Tulasi’s feelings. She finds herself in love with him, yet she cannot be sure that Subramani feels the same. Complications arise when Subramani’s father arranges a marriage between Subramani and Tulasi, and Subramani refuses the match. The decision shatters the household: Tulasi’s mother Kamala Kamesh dies in frustration, and Tulasi has to move away to live with her uncle as the family deals with the grief and disarray.

A troubling flashback then reveals Subramani’s own past love for Noorjahan Amala Akkineni, a college student who always wore a veil, keeping her face hidden from him. The two plan to meet, but tragedy strikes when Noorjahan slips into quicksand and dies. Subramani is left deeply despondent, and the memory of Noorjahan hardens his heart, convincing him to avoid marriage and, in turn, to pull away from Tulasi.

Back in the present, Tulasi’s longing grows heavier, and she contemplates ending her life by stepping into the same quicksand that claimed Noorjahan. Yet Subramani intervenes at the last moment, rushing in to save Tulasi and revealing that he has finally understood the depth of her true love for him. In that pivotal moment, the distance between them collapses, and a new hope begins to form as Subramani recognizes the sincerity of Tulasi’s feelings and chooses to stay by her side.
