Deva, a computer science post-graduate in Chennai, teams up with Dass to smuggle pre-release unlicensed films on DVD and other contraband, mostly through air routes. Deva’s widowed mother Kaveri Velusamy disapproves of his chosen life of crime and clings to the hope of a safer, lawful path for her son. Their former business associate’s son Kamalesh plots to derail their operation and seize control of the smuggling routes through police-backed channels, aiming to reshape the empire in his own favor.
When Kamalesh orchestrates a raid on their hideout, an inspector pressures Dass to shoulder the blame. Deva volunteers, but a stranger, Chitti Babu, takes responsibility instead. This act leads to a twist of fate: Chitti joins Dass’s crew and forms a wary, evolving friendship with Deva as he continues his education and learns the full breadth of their illicit trade. Over months, Chitti Babu takes part in a wide range of smuggling operations across international routes, absorbing the schemes and loopholes that keep the operation afloat.
Meanwhile, Deva unexpectedly encounters Yamuna, a young woman who captures his interest, and the pair soon fall in love. On Deva’s birthday, the duo and their team attempt a monumental haul, smuggling gold bars worth $150 million from a tanker at the Chennai port. Dass offers Deva money and a day off to celebrate, while the rest of the crew continue the grueling work. Deva is summoned to temple worship by his mother, and trouble erupts when customs authorities get wind of a possible raid, forcing the crew to narrowly escape with the treasure. The sting in the tale comes with the revelation that Chitti has been secretly working for Kamalesh all along.
Chitti’s allegiance shifts again as he becomes Kamalesh’s drug mule, swallowing heroin capsules and transporting them to Malaysia, all the while crossing paths with Deva on a flight. Disembarking, Chitti falls ill, and Deva fights off Kamalesh’s gang to save him. In a rare moment of honesty, Chitti confesses that his friendship with Deva was real, even as he walked the other side of the law.
The tension peaks when Kamalesh’s gang kidnaps Chitti before Deva can intervene, and they murder him to recover the drugs. Deva fights through the danger to rescue him, but Chitti passes away in Deva’s arms; in his last wish, he asks Deva to burn him so his family will never know the truth. Deva complies, burning Chitti’s body along with the drugs and returning to India with his belongings. Kamalesh leaks word of Chitti’s death to the authorities, prompting Yamuna to file a case against Deva. Yet Yamuna later discovers Chitti’s phone, which records the circumstances of his death, clearing Deva of wrongdoing.
A fragile peace follows, but Kamalesh brazenly plants drugs at the airport and pins them on Deva. To expose Kamalesh, Deva tips off the customs officer Parthiban and collaborates to monitor Kamalesh’s calls, unraveling a string of illegal shipments. Kamalesh suspects the trap and tries to eliminate Deva and Parthiban, yet the two escape and seize a massive cocaine shipment tied to Kamalesh’s operation. They trace the shipment to Kamalesh’s accountant, who agrees to testify after Deva secretly records Kamalesh making inappropriate advances on the accountant’s daughter Kavitha. Kamalesh has the accountant killed, and the case falters for lack of concrete evidence, allowing Kamalesh to walk free.
Kamalesh then targets Deva and his mother, but Dass arrives to shield Deva, ultimately perishing when his vehicle collides with a petroleum tanker. Undeterred, Deva heads to Congo to finish Kamalesh and reclaim the diamonds. Upon returning to India, Parthiban reveals that Deva’s mother helped push him away from crime to protect her son. With the truth in hand, Deva surrenders the diamonds, disguised under a wig, and Parthiban hints at a potential future for Deva within the system as a customs official. He accepts, and steps out with his mother Kaveri Velusamy and Yamuna, choosing a path toward a legitimate life while leaving behind the dangerous world he once navigated.
