What's After the Movie
Venantino Venantini (17 April 1930 – 9 October 2018) was a prolific Italian film actor whose career spanned more than six decades, encompassing over 140 performances across a remarkable variety of genres. Born in the historic town of Fabriano in the Marche region, he entered cinema in 1954 with a small part in Steno’s Un giorno in pretura, quickly demonstrating a talent for supporting roles that would become his hallmark. His first significant role arrived in Franco Rossi’s Odissea Nuda (1961), where his nuanced presence caught the attention of both Italian and French filmmakers. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Venantini appeared in cult classics such as Les Tontons flingueurs, Amore libero – Free Love, Black Emanuelle, and the horror landmark City of the Living Dead, cementing his reputation as a versatile character actor. He shared the screen with icons like Lino Ventura, Yves Montand, Alain Delon and Gérard Depardieu, and collaborated with celebrated directors including Ettore Scola, Luciano Salce, Dino Risi as well as French masters Georges Lautner, Gérard Oury and Claude Lelouch. Venantini’s ability to adapt to comedy, drama, thriller and exploitation cinema made him a sought‑after figure in international co‑productions, often portraying suave gentlemen, military officers, or gritty villains with equal conviction. In addition to his on‑screen work, he was the father of two children, Victoria and Luca, who followed his artistic spirit. Even in his later years he continued to act, appearing in films such as The Museum of Wonders (2010) and Marseille (2016), proving a relentless dedication to his craft until his death in Viterbo in 2018. His extensive filmography and cross‑cultural impact remain a testament to a life devoted to the silver screen.
