In the vibrant setting of Saint-Tropez on France’s stunning French Riviera, the story revolves around the enduring relationship between Albin (Michel Serrault) and Renato (Ugo Tognazzi), who have been lovers for over two decades. They own La Cage aux Folles, a lively and provocative nightclub renowned for featuring talented transvestite performers, with Albin as its star performer under the stage name Zaza. The film explores themes of love, identity, and social acceptance with warmth and humor.
The plot thickens when Renato’s Rémi Laurent, his 19-year-old son, returns from college in Paris and announces his engagement to Andrea (Luisa Maneri), the daughter of Monsieur Charrier, a conservative government official and secretary of the Union of Moral Order. Monsieur Charrier has a reputation for conservatism, especially after a scandal involving the death of the former president of his union, who died unexpectedly during a scandalous encounter. Before the engagement dinner, Andrea lies about her family’s connections, claiming Renato is an Italian cultural attache and that her mother is a simple housewife, trying to protect her family from scandal.
To prepare for the visit, Renato and Albin attempt to adapt their environment, making their once provocative and flamboyant apartment look much more conservative. Meanwhile, Renato reconnects with Simone (Claire Maurier), a film actress and his former lover, who has a complex history with Renato from twenty years earlier. She demands a rekindling of their past affair in exchange for her participation in the dinner, which Renato refuses, leading to a heated and emotional confrontation. During this encounter, Albin walks in on Renato and Simone, and feeling betrayed, he decides to leave Renato and the only life he ever knew, heading to a train station with a heavy heart.
Later, Renato manages to persuade Albin that his love for him remains strong, which brings the couple back together. In a bid to avoid creating a scene during the dinner, Albin agrees to stay out of sight, dressed as a woman in his stage persona. On the day of the dinner, Jacques (Benny Luke), the butler, behaves strangely, causing suspicion among the guests. Simone joins the meeting, and shortly after, Albin’s wig is knocked askew, revealing the true nature of his identity.
The climax unfolds when Albin reveals everything—his identity as Zaza, the ownership of La Cage aux Folles, and the true relationship with Renato. To everyone’s surprise, the nightclub’s transvestite performers arrive moments later to celebrate the couple’s 20th anniversary, turning what could have been an embarrassing moment into a joyful celebration. Monsieur Charrier, overwhelmed and scandalized, attempts to leave, only to find reporters waiting outside, ready to expose the family’s secret. To protect their reputation, Renato and Albin cleverly disguise Charrier and Andrea in drag, allowing them to leave discreetly through the nightclub.
The film concludes with a joyful wedding between Laurent and Andrea, highlighting hope and acceptance. During the ceremony, Albin feels a twinge of jealousy when Simone is seated beside Andrea’s parents, but Renato reassures him that their bond remains strong. Ultimately, the story celebrates the power of love in all its forms and challenges societal norms with humor, warmth, and resilience.
