Tyrone Power

Tyrone Edmund Power III was one of Hollywood’s most charismatic leading men, celebrated for his swash‑buckling charm, striking good looks, and a career that spanned over two and a half decades. Born on May 5 1914 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of stage‑screen actor Tyrone Power Sr. and descended from a long line of Irish theatrical talent, including his great‑grandfather the 19th‑century actor Tyrone Power. After graduating from Purcell High School in 1931, he joined his father’s troupe, honed his craft on Broadway, and attracted the attention of director Henry King, which led to his first major screen breakthrough in Lloyd’s of London (1936). From that moment Power became a box‑office powerhouse, starring in classics such as Jesse James, The Mark of Zorro, The Black Swan, Blood and Sand, and Prince of Foxes. His versatility allowed him to shift from light‑hearted romantic comedies to gritty film noir, with Nightmare Alley (1947) earning his personal admiration despite studio resistance.

The actor’s life was equally dramatic off‑screen. He served as a United States Marine Corps pilot during World II, flying cargo missions in the Pacific and earning several campaign medals before returning to Hollywood in 1946. Power’s personal life included three marriages—to French actress Annabella (1939‑1948), Mexican star Linda Christian (1949‑1955), and former model Deborah Minardos (1958)—and three children: Romina, Taryn, and Tyrone Jr. A chronic smoker and a passionate aviator, he suffered a fatal heart attack while filming Solomon and Sheba in Spain, dying on November 15 1958 at age 44. He was buried with full military honors at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, leaving a legacy of timeless films and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
