What's After the Movie
Joseph Michael Kerrigan (born 16 December 1884 in Dublin, Ireland) was a prolific Irish actor whose career spanned more than five decades, moving fluidly between stage, silent film, talkies, and later television. He began his artistic journey in 1907 when he joined the Irish National Theatre, later known as the Abbey Players, where he quickly became a stalwart performing works by Lady Gregory, W. B. Yeats and J. M. Synge, even creating the role of Shawn Keogh in The Playboy of the Western World. His early experience touring New York in 1908 and again in 1911 exposed him to American audiences, although the 1911 production sparked a famous riot due to its controversial content. By the 1920s Kerrigan had established himself on Broadway, appearing in at least thirty‑five productions that ranged from Shakespearean tragedies to Ibsen dramas and popular comedies, such as the 1924 hit Outward Bound alongside Dudley Digges, Alfred Lunt and Leslie Howard. His screen debut came in the silent era with Food of Love in 1916 and he eventually appeared in six silent pictures before moving to Hollywood in 1935, recruited by John Ford for The Informer. In Hollywood Kerrigan became known for portraying gritty, often morally ambiguous characters—the leech‑type figures in The Informer and The Long Voyage Home—and he delivered a memorable performance as the sinister thief Leach in The General Died at Dawn. He also played the jovial mill owner John Gallegher in the classic Gone with the Wind (1939) and appeared in Disney’s adventure 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). Though many of his film roles were brief, Kerrigan accumulated credits in 114 short and feature‑length productions and later transitioned to television, guest‑starring in fifteen series between 1952 and 1960. He died in Hollywood on 29 April 1964 at the age of seventy‑nine and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing his legacy as a versatile performer who bridged Irish theatre and American cinema.
