In 1880s England, Duchess, the mare of a widowed Squire Wendon Charles Evans, is about to foal. His adolescent daughter Anne Mona Freeman Wendon is forbidden to watch, but she slips into the stables and witnesses the moment anyway. The birth marks the start of a deep, enduring bond between girl and horse, as the quiet companionship that grows between them shapes the course of their lives.

On Anne’s birthday the colt arrives, and because of his striking color she names him Black Beauty Highland Dale. As the years pass, Anne grows increasingly fond of the horse, and Black Beauty becomes her closest confidant and partner in adventure, sharing long rides and quiet evenings alike. The pair learns together, building trust and a sense of mutual responsibility that will be tested many times over.

A young American named Bill Dixon Richard Denning visits the neighboring farm and spots Black Beauty. He cannot stay for tea because he must return to America, but two years later he sends Anne a gift and a letter announcing his plan to come back. This keeps the flame of possibility alive for Anne, who begins to ride more seriously and even teaches her horse to jump, cherishing the growing skill she develops with Black Beauty at her side.

When Bill returns after earning an Ivy League education, Anne finds herself drawn to him, but he still regards her as a girl rather than a woman. The mood shifts further when Evelyn Carrington Evelyn Ankers, the neighbor’s daughter, is introduced during a riding outing, igniting jealousy in Anne. To prove herself, she pushes to ride side-saddle, following a tradition she admires in the grown women around her. The tension between romance, ambition, and coming of age threads through their rides, shaping choices that follow.

Evelyn’s horse is injured, so she borrows Black Beauty to ride with Bill. In a bid to catch his eye, Anne borrows Ginger from her father and takes a risky jump that ends with a fall, leaving her unconscious. Dr. White John Burton is summoned to tend to both rider and horse, as Black Beauty shows signs of exhaustion and a need for careful rest and care rather than speed and bravado.

The horse’s overtaxed state worsens when the groom Joe Terry Kilburn fails to prevent the animal from drinking a surprisingly large amount of cold water after being worked hard. The result is a setback that derails the hopes pinned on Black Beauty’s future, and Anne must confront the possibility of losing the bond she cherishes so deeply. Yet the horse’s will to recover shines through, and Bill and Evelyn visit, offering support even as Anne decides to step back from drama and jealousy by returning to the idea of boarding school.

Before she leaves, John J.M. Kerrigan promises to look after Black Beauty, a gesture that carries weight because it speaks to the trust the girl places in the people around her. But the horse’s health grows more fragile than expected, and a difficult decision looms: Black Beauty may have to be put down. John pretends to carry out the deed, firing his gun out of sight and then concealing the horse from his employer, a ruse meant to spare the animal’s life and preserve the hope of recovery.

When Anne returns from school, she learns that Black Beauty has been sold at auction to a local baker, and he does not treat the horse well. Anne and John set out to find him, with Bill joining the search and bringing a new romantic current to the effort. They encounter Joe again, who knows Black Beauty is nearby, and the pursuit intensifies as the stakes rise.

The search culminates in a dramatic rescue when a fire breaks out at the nearby stable. Anne springs into action, risking herself to save Black Beauty, and Bill arrives just in time to help pull them both from danger. The blaze becomes a crucible that tests loyalty, love, and perseverance, but it ends with a hopeful note: Anne and Bill share a kiss, and Black Beauty stands proudly as the father of a new colt, a symbol of renewal and life continuing forward after hardship.
