Black Beauty 2020

A wild mustang from the Onaqui Mountains in Utah tells the story of her life from birth, guided by a mother who teaches that when horses pass away they rise to the stars. As the herd is roped by cowboys, she is separated from her family and brought to a horse sanctuary called Birtwick by a patient trainer named John Manly. He earns her trust even when she resists, and there she befriends two other horses, Ginger and Merrylegs, who become part of her new world.

Meanwhile, Jo Green learns that her aunt and uncle have died in a car accident, leaving her to live with her guardian uncle. Jo initially resists the idea of opening her heart to anyone, but the stubborn mare senses Jo’s pain and slowly forms a deep connection with her. The mare nicknames her Beauty, and Jo, inspired by their growing trust, begins to tame her. The two of them forge a unique partnership, a bond built on patience, gentleness, and a shared sense of resilience. Beauty’s presence helps Jo move through her own grief, and in turn Jo brings warmth and purpose to Beauty’s days.

As the bond deepens, John guides Jo toward a different way of working with horses—one based on partnership rather than force. They practice “partnering” a horse, a philosophy that emphasizes communication, trust, and cooperation. Jo discovers that working with Beauty is not about domination but about listening to the horse and responding with care. When Beauty spots a moment of joy on Jo’s face, it becomes a turning point: the mare learns to respond to Jo’s emotions, and Jo experiences a sense of freedom she hasn’t felt before—she rides along the stable with Beauty, feeling the wind in her hair and the sun on her skin, and for a fleeting moment, they feel as one.

A fire breaks out one night, forcing an evacuation. Birtwick’s finances grow precarious, and Jo worries that Beauty might be sold to settle debts. She makes a deal with Henry Gordon to work extra to save Beauty, and their bond strengthens as they face the challenge together. The wealthy Winthorp family arrives from England, and Georgina Winthorp chooses Beauty to lease for their estate. Beauty’s journey continues far from Birtwick. She is sold to a ranger named Terry, who uses her in rescue missions across the wilderness. After Terry retires, Beauty passes through a sequence of owners who place increasing demands on her strength: a farmer who relies on old tools, and later a kindly carriage driver in New York City whose daughter names her Lady. In a painful turn, Ginger—Beauty’s old friend from Birtwick—dies after being sold to a different owner, a heartbreak that deepens Beauty’s longing for home.

A cruel carriage company becomes a new chapter of hardship for Beauty, who witnesses the body of Ginger being handled as a trophy in a grim world of illegal trade. The cruelty catches up with Beauty until a compassionate stable boy named Manuel helps alert the police to the illegal activities. Jo, now grown and operating with renewed purpose, finds Beauty and reunites with her. She reveals that she has rebuilt Birtwick and, together with John Manly and George Winthorp—now her husband—they devote themselves to rehabilitating horses and giving them second chances. They even locate Merrylegs, who has also been recovered. Beauty returns to Jo and makes a new life at Birtwick, living out her days in a place where she is valued, cared for, and finally at peace.

Through every twist of fortune, Beauty’s memory remains a guiding thread for Jo and the people who believe in a gentler approach to horsemanship.
