What's After the Movie
Calam Finbar Lynch (born 7 November 1994) is a British actor who has rapidly established himself across film, television and stage since his professional debut in 2017. Born in Warwickshire, England, he is the son of celebrated Irish performers Niamh Cusack and Finbar Lynch, placing him within the distinguished Cusack acting dynasty that includes aunts Sinéad, Sorcha and Catherine, as well as cousin Max Irons, whose own career inspired Calam to pursue acting. He spent his early childhood in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, attending the local primary academy before his family relocated to Barnes in South West London, where he later enrolled at Latymer Upper School. Demonstrating academic promise, Lynch studied classics at Somerville College, Oxford, graduating in 2017, and while at university he participated in numerous stage productions that honed his craft. During his final year he secured representation and landed a small part in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, marking his entry into the film industry. After graduation he tackled Shakespearean roles, notably playing Claudio in the Rose Theatre Kingston production of Much Ado About Nothing, and quickly transitioned to screen work as Gordon Wilson in the BBC One miniseries Mrs Wilson (2018). Subsequent appearances include a guest spot as John‑Paul O’Reilly on Derry Girls and a performance in Wife at the Kiln Theatre (2019). Lynch’s first major film lead came opposite Mackenzie Foy in Disney’s 2020 adaptation of Black Beauty, followed by his portrayal of Stephen Tennant in Terence Davies’s biopic Benediction (2021). In 2022 he joined the second season of Netflix’s period drama Bridgerton as Theo Sharpe, and in 2023 he embodied a young Cary Grant in ITV’s Archie. Most recently, he has been cast in a recurring role for the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Across his varied portfolio, Lynch is noted for his classical training, nuanced performances and the ability to navigate both period pieces and contemporary narratives, positioning him as a versatile talent in the current generation of British actors.
